Architect Africa Network Knowledge Base : the basis for a future Intelligent System

The State of African Cities Report

By 2030 the majority of Africans will be urban residents, and the majority of them will live in slums and informal settlements unless radical corrective measures are taken. To leverage Africa's options in an environment that is simultaneously global and local, it is important for its leaders at all levels to develop forward-looking visions based on analyses of where Africa is now and where it wants to be in the future.

This publication aims to provide focus and encouragement to African governments at the central and local level as well as to other key actors in the broad area of sustainable human settlements development.

For all companies involved in the construction and infrastructure sectors, the new Eurocode regulations will have decisive importance. Haig Gulvanessian is one of the experts who was involved in developing the Eurocodes.

Professor Haig Gulvanessian has a medal on a unique ribbon that many people desire. In 2007, he received one of Britain’s top honors when, together with a famous travel writer, a jazz pianist and a former head of British Intelligence, he was awarded a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth for his “services to the construction industry.” He also has the Czech Technical University’s prestigious “Gold Medal First Class,” an honor he shares with former US President George Bush Sr. Both decorations, proudly placed on his mantelpiece, recognize his achievements in the fields of civil and structural engineering, particularly in the field of Eurocodes.

Global market rebound possibly 'eye of the storm'

Consumers should continue to be cautious with their spending despite global markets stabilising and Wall Street registering its highest gains in a single day since the darkest days of the Great Depression, writes Michael Appel.

While stability is retuning to the markets with a general reversal in losses sustained over the last two weeks, economist warn this could only be the eye of the storm.

Investec Asset Management strategist Michael Power told BuaNews on Wednesday it was the real economy which was most likely to come under strain in the next few months.
