Silverstar Undergoes Multi-Million Rand Refurbishment

Silverstar, a Tsogo Sun property located in Mogale City on Johannesburg’s West Rand has recently undergone a R560-million refurbishment.

The complex, which opened its doors in March 2008, was redeveloped to create a variety of additional dining options and an outdoor events area, allowing the complex to host live concerts and events such as the popular Boktown.

The development was undertaken as a single-phase project. Construction started in May 2013 and was completed in September 2014.

“We realised that our customers enjoy spending time outdoors and to make full use of this concept and our spectacular location, an outdoor square is being introduced,” says Shane Collinson, Director of Operations and Complex General Manager at Silverstar.

Drawing inspiration from the surrounding foothills of Roodekrans Ridge, the development brings Silverstar into the open air, with leisure and entertainment facilities built around a large village square.

The overall architectural concept of the development revolves around the creation of a mix of dining and lounge experiences, which are located in terraces, courtyards, pavilions and outdoor rooms. The design has been done to reinforce the international trend of cafe and bistro style dining and the growing trend to dine alfresco.

Silverstar boasted one of the world’s largest musical fountains, which has now made way for the village square and family dining zone. Although the fountain’s size has been reduced, the splendour of the fountain is not all lost as it will now function as a beautiful water feature and musical fountain at the northern facade of the square and cleverly sets the hotel apart from the activities happening in the square.

The use of fragmented dining pods form a subtle transition from the square to the hotel to ensure privacy for the hotel and spa guests while still allowing some of the vibrant atmosphere of the square to filter through.

Four new restaurants will dot the square, all offering al fresco dining for the whole family and interactive outdoor entertainment facilities. While the entry court will allow for quieter waterside dining alongside the water feature, the bottom of the square is the more lively arena and will open out into a large space where a multi-million Rand outdoor screen, featuring cutting edge technology, will project Boktown rugby matches and other big sporting events to approximately 1 100 seated spectators. “The screen forms part of the open square which will feature a stage capable of accommodating music performers, fashion shows and even theatre productions for children,” says Collinson.

Most of the restaurants are fronting onto the square and have seating arrangements on terraces with views of the big screen. The square will terminate in a multi-function arena that will be used for informal entertainment as well as a variety of events and functions. This versatile 2 942m2 space will function as an outdoor concert venue with a seating capacity of 2 500 and additional informal terraced seating for 1 643 spectators. In addition, the events arena consists of a domed shaped steel structure marquee that allows for the hosting of functions, concerts and events within a controlled environment.

Next to the multi function arena is yet another attractive offering – The Brew Pub. This will open out onto the arena and offer an integrated beer garden and casual family dining. The Brew Pub forms a social anchor and get together venue with live one man bands and an outdoor braai and beer garden.

The beer garden is built over two levels and is intended to be a social outdoor family venue offering typical South African braais. It features an industrial aesthetic with a brewery atmosphere. The pub will accommodate approximately 250 internal seats, 100 on terraces and 200 people externally.

In order for such a diverse array of offerings to integrate seamlessly into one another, landscaping has been carefully considered to create a naturally shaded environment and garden type atmosphere, while high quality concrete pavers and slate inserts, as well as natural timber decks and flagstones, will complement the existing architecture.

An assembly of simple but interesting shapes will tie the different structures and spaces together in a new way, while the overall theme driving the redevelopment is one of blurring the divide between inside and outside.

Regular visitors will recognise architectural elements from the previous Silverstar design, but new facades and spaces are going to change the overall feel of the entertainment complex to a light, transparent and continuous arena that brings nature in and subtly expands the floor area in order to cater for all of the exciting new additions to the facilities.

The bold contemporary elements and shapes existing in the original facade have been integrated into and form the backdrop to the lighter and more transient new look. The materials proposed are metalwork and natural materials which form part of the original concept, although the forms are much lighter in appearance and will harmonise with the natural lines to create a new and fresh aesthetic in the square.

The development is not simply about aesthetics, but creates a total experience for the family. Additional facilities not previously mentioned include six cinemas, all boasting the latest technology 3D screens; a 12-lane bowling alley; two additional restaurants inside the property; laser games; a refurbished casino; an upmarket indoor multipurpose events venue and additional parking.
Additionally, the entire gaming floor and internal complex will be aesthetically refreshed to complement and bring together the theme of the development.
