GSA-Boogertman + Partners International Lecture Series 2018 : Download Programme

For the second year running, Africa’s leading architectural practice, Boogertman + Partners, is the headline sponsor of the GSA-Boogertman + Partners International Lecture Series. The series, presented by the Graduate School of Architecture (GSA) at the University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA), brings together highly renowned local and international architects to speak at the GSA’s downtown home, the GAP at Museum of African Design (MOAD) in Maboneng.
Director at Boogertman + Partners Bob van Bebber says, “The GSA-Boogertman + Partners International Lecture Series is an opportunity not only for architects and lovers of architecture and design to interact with some of the best, most interesting and original architectural thinkers and practitioners in the world, but it is also an opportunity to broaden and invigorate the conversations we have about architecture to take in a broader social and intellectual realm.”

He adds that events such as the GSA-Boogertman + Partners International Lecture Series also encourage, develop and enrich the fields of architecture and design, at the heart of which lies the essentially collaborative nature of architecture.

Professor Lesley Lokko, Head of the UJ Graduate School of Architecture (GSA) and convenor of the lecture series, says, “This outstanding commitment on the part of [Boogertman + Partners] will allow us to expand our ambitions to make Thursday nights at our Maboneng base a real go-to place for students, practitioners and architecture and urbanism aficionados. It also places the GSA firmly on the international lecture circuit, giving our own staff and students even more global exposure and perspectives.”

The lecture series has become a leading fixture on the South African architectural calendar, and presents the invaluable opportunity for architectural students, professionals and those with a keen interest in architecture to hear and interact with world-class local and international speakers, while building a great platform for new African design voices.

This year’s programme starts on 8 February 2018 with Pritzker prize-winning Chilean architect Alejandro Aravena, well known not only as an academic and curator of the 15th Venice Biennale, but also for his work as a partner in the architectural firm ELEMENTAL, which produces work that stands out for its unbiased approach and willingness to enter fields they have not yet explored, generating original contributions to peoples’ quality of life.

Speakers confirmed for the first half of the year also include Rahul Mehotra (USA/India), Eyal Weitzman (UK), Iñaqui Carnicero (Spain), Jo Noero (South Africa), Samia Henni (Algeria), Gregory Katz (South Africa) and Mpho Matsipa (South Africa).

The first lecture in the GSA-Boogertman + Partners International Lecture Series takes place on 8 February 2018 at the GAP at MOAD, 281 Commissioner Street, Maboneng, Johannesburg. All lectures are free and open to the public. All lectures earn Cat 1,
