Green Scorpions : Beware the sting
Pretoria - Environmental officials, known as the Green Scorpions, are to embark on a six-month campaign to inspect compliance to legislation, the Department of Environmental Affairs said on Monday.
The Green Scorpions will target 40 Environmental Authorisations and 20 waste licensees.
The department said the aim of the campaign was to monitor adherence to conditions stipulated in Environmental Management Plans and waste licenses. It was also expected to improve the general status of compliance within the regulated community through taking proper enforcement actions in the event of non-compliance.
The first environmental compliance inspections will take place in the Western Cape from 27 September to 01 October 2010. In the upcoming weeks, provincial inspections will take place in KwaZulu-Natal, Free State and the Eastern Cape.
Further inspections are envisaged in December and January next year.
