Former Maputo Arsenal to Become Nature Park

Maputo — Maputo Municipal Council and the National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC) hope to conclude the work required to turn the former arsenal in the outlying Maputo neighbourhood of Malhazine into an ecological park by December.

The general director of ANAC, Bartolomeu Soto, announced this on Tuesday, when he signed a memorandum of understanding with the Mayor of Maputo, David Simango. This will be the first conservation area set up inside a city.

Transforming Malhazine into an ecological park follows the removal of all the weaponry, after the tragedy of 2007, when badly stored and obsolete ammunition exploded, sending shells and other pieces of heavy ordnance all over the city. 103 people died in the explosions and 515 were injured.
