Buildings All Over Kigali but Not Enough Fire Fighting Equipment

By Daniel S. Ntwari

Even as Kigali and satellite districts register a rise in commercial buildings and modern homes, thanks to a construction boom borne of a strengthening private sector and increased foreign direct investments, compliance with fire safety measures remains low.

An inspection of fire safety and property risk management conducted by the City of Kigali indicated low compliance in major buildings, with only 50 per cent of big commercial buildings up to standard.

It is worse at homes and public places such as markets due to negligence and slow up take of fire insurance policies.

The City of Kigali is the most affected by fire breakouts, according to statistics from police. Between January and June 2015, 49 cases of fire were recorded of which 41 occurred in Kigali.
