Durban - Renewed protest action broke out in Chatsworth on Friday morning, capping a week of civil unrest across KwaZulu-Natal.
Residents of Chatsglen vandalised a train station and blocked part of the main arterial route through the suburb, the M1 Higginson Highway.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala said that the fracas began in the early hours of the morning.
“This morning from 5am, commuters at the Chatsglen Railway Station burnt alabaster sheeting from the railway station platform roofs,” she said.
“Chatsworth Fire Department and Chatsworth police officials at the scene are assessing the situation,” she added.
“The traffic is flowing as normal and trains are running as normal, the situation is stable. At this stage the only damages are to property. The commuters were not injured.”
Gwala said it was still unclear what sparked the protest.
