Teargas, gunshots as squatters evicted from Kenyan farm

Mombasa - Over 400 squatters on Hussein Farm in Mombasa County, Kenya, have been left homeless after police officers demolished their dwellings and set their bedding on fire.

At least 200 structures were demolished and the squatters evicted amid teargas and gunshots on Thursday.

According to Daily Nation, 30 police officers and prison wardens were deployed to conduct the eviction, with the squatters complaining that they were not given eviction notices, or served with demolition orders.

Land disputes are common in the east African country.

Last week, one man was shot dead in a dispute over the ownership of another farm in Nakuru County.

The man was allegedly killed by a medical doctor, who was believed to be the owner of the farm. The man was shot as he collected materials from his house that had been torched by unknown people.

The Star reported that 20 suspects were arrested in connection with the arson, but the fate of the killer doctor remained unknown.
