Durban - A 49-year-old man died after he was crushed by a retaining wall that collapsed at his house in Westville, Durban, late on Friday, said paramedics.

His wife was seriously injured, said Crisis Medical spokesperson Kyle van Reenen.

Paramedics found the man lying at the entrance of his home. He had suffered internal injuries.

"Unfortunately, nothing could be done to save the man and he was declared dead on the scene," said Van Reenen.

The man's wife is suspected to have suffered neck and spinal injuries.

She was treated on the scene before being rushed to hospital.

ER24 said it was understood that the man's home lost power during a heavy rain storm in Durban.

"Bystanders said the man, another adult and two teenagers went outside near the wall before it collapsed. It is not clear if they suspected the wall had been damaged," ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

The wall collapsed, pinning the man under rubble and water.

Police are investigating.

The Pavillion shopping mall was also flooded during the downpour.

Pictures on social media showed one of the floors covered in water and the underground parking bays flooded.

Friday's storm caused major traffic disruptions in some Durban areas.

A News24 reader said she was stuck under a bridge for more than 20 minutes as drivers struggled to make their way through the water.
