Cape Town - A total of 82 police officers have been killed since the start of the year.
This has resulted in SAPS adopting a "back to basics approach" by implementing an integrated police safety plan "to enhance and ensure the safety of all members", Minister of Police Nathi Nhleko said on Sunday at a justice, crime prevention and security cluster briefing.
"In addition, safety awareness to ensure appropriate tactical and operational responses was enhanced internally," he said.
Earlier this year, Deputy Police Minister Maggie Sotyu confirmed most of the police killings committed in the country in 2015 took place in the Western Cape and Gauteng.
According to Sotyu, most of those killed were skilled officers who were difficult to replace.
Nhleko said a management team has also visited police stations to encourage the “comprehensive, multi-disciplinary and integrated” police safety plan.
"Clearly this is an untenable position and we view the killing of members of the South African Police Service as an attempt to undermine the legitimate authority of our democratic state," he said.
