Cape Town - Firefighters would continue to monitor an extensive veld fire near Melkbosstrand which had been burning since Tuesday morning, Cape Town's Fire and Rescue Services said.

The blaze, which started at about 09:30, was contained between the M19, the N7 and Morning Star, spokesperson Theo Layne said.

"The wind is expected to pick up a bit later. We will have crews on the scene to monitor the area," he said.

The M19 was closed to traffic earlier on Tuesday due to smoke affecting visibility, but has since been reopened.

No homes were in danger, Layne added.

The cause of the blaze was currently undetermined.
