Numerous Maputo suburbs without water & electricity

Numerous suburbs in Maputo and surrounding areas have been without water since the weekend and numerous others face water & electricity restrictions due to the failure of an electrical substation supplied by Efacec, a company founded in 1999 by a member of the ruling party, Frelimo, reports Mozambican news agency @Verdade ( ).

More than 150,000 of the 220,000 residents of Maputo and periphery are affected by the water shortage and blackouts.

The Mozambican capital has been suffering from electrical shortages since the Matola electrical sub-station broke down last week.

EDM, the Mozambican electricity supply company, estimates that it will take up to eight weeks to repair the damaged substation.

The "Centro de Integridade Pública" (Centre for Public Integrity) has published a study which indicates that current and former members of the political party in power, including the former president Armando Guebuza and various other ministers, have majority share holdings in the Mozambican electrical supply company.

Frelimo, the party in government, has ruled the country since 1975.
