Rent-A-Drum Employs Dumpsite Scavengers
ABOUT 30 residents of Swakopmund who scavenged for food and other waste materials at the dumpsite there, received permanent jobs at the new Swakopmund Recycling Sorting Plant which opened on Friday.
The N$7 million facility was established by Rent-A-Drum in partnership with the Swakopmund municipality. It sorts materials such as cardboard boxes, papers, plastic and metal cans, glass bottles, plastic bags, and milk/juice boxes among other recyclable materials.
Speaking at the official opening on Friday, the managing director of Rent-A-Drum, Gys Louw, said the recycling plant employs 65 people from Swakopmund on a full-time basis. "Our objective is to keep the town clean and provide employment, especially to those who always scavenge at the dumpsite," Louw said.
