Families Moved As Construction of Rusumo Dam Set to Start

Construction of the 80MW hydropower dam at Rusumo Falls on Akagera River by the governments of Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania is set to begin in the first quarter of 2016, after relocating families that live on the project land.

The last group of 133 Tanzanian families left the land in August; 53 Rwandan households were relocated in May, the paving way for civil works on the $470 million project.

The project, jointly funded by World Bank and African Development Bank, has two components — construction of the power plant and installation of high voltage transmission lines.
