Pretoria - The side wall of a bridge in Olievenhoutbosch, Centurion, collapsed on Saturday morning, said paramedics.

"The side of the bridge has caved in, but this has in no way affected the bridge," said Tshwane EMS spokesperson Johan Pieterse.

He said the panels which held the bridge up had in no way been affected.

Pictures of the collapse were circulating on Facebook by the afternoon with some alleging that there may have been people sleeping under the bridge when it collapsed.

"EMS searching for bodies as blankets [were] found in the rubble... Gauteng Dept of roads/transport [is] busy arranging [a] response team....... But its gonna take a while," posted one person on Facebook.

Pieterse denied the claims.

"We have been on the scene since earlier this morning and we would have found the people by now if they were there," he said.

It was unclear whether the collapse was due to the rain which affected has affected some parts of the province since Friday.
