Crimes against humanity – when religious values are misplaced

The worst kind of crimes are those committed against humans on a recurrent scale. If there ever was a group that would be guilty of war crimes, the world need not look beyond ISIS. The religion of Islam has continuously been tainted by this sect, as they propagate non-existent values about the sacred religion for the sake of power.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has been terrorizing the Arab countries of Iraq and Syria, committing several barbaric and heinous crimes in the full glare of the world. The extremist militant group is just one of many groups that have sprung up in different countries with agendas that claim to be in sync with some religious stipulation.

Following the declaration of an Islamic state in Iraq in 2006, the group has geared itself towards imposing Allah’s supremacy on everyone. The continuous violent actions of ISIS from 2013 to present, has continued to reverberate across the world.

Being an avid believer on the religion of Islam is irrelevant here. The mere notion that a supreme being will demand indiscriminate murders consisting of public executions, crucifixions and beheadings is nauseating at best. How is it possible that a benevolent God is all right with the beheadings and the brutal murders of ‘Infidels’? These murders take on an even more sickening level, as these ISIS fighters shamelessly ‘share’ the results of their bloodlust on social media. It you have a strong will and gut to watch their videos or go through their photos, and when you do, you can almost hear them bragging about these inhumane acts.

Nigeria’s home-based terrorist group, Boko Haram, also of the Salafism persuasion, has over the years committed many crimes bordering on the abuse of human rights. Its current leader, Abubakar Shekau is the ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) Emir of West Africa as of 2015, he etched his name in the sands of time by masterminding the abduction of over 200 school girls from Chibok, Borno state, Nigeria in 2013.

The existence and continuous flourishing of ISIS is proof that organized religion has caused and still causes global challenges. Marium Irshad in this article speaks freely about how Islamic fanaticism has created some kind of distort of what truly obtains in Islam as opposed to the activities of extremists.  She says…] “This honor has left us diseased, where nothing except hating others is considered the right course towards the higher pedestal of gaining Allah’s pleasure”.

It is laughable that for all ISIS declarations of hatred for all the West stands for, it makes use of high-tech for recruiting and spreading information on their dirty and barbaric activities. While the group remains ‘untouched’, their spread into Libya and Egypt in 2015, shows that the agenda for an Islamic state is a bigger monster than the world can imagine.

The latest of the barbaric acts of this group is the theological portrayal of rape and slavery, these acts have been hailed by the terrorist group as good. ISIS leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and his crop of fighters’ list of crimes keep piling up, all in the false worship of a God who has long turned his back on them. This feature piece carries the testimonies of Yazidi escapees from the clutches of ISIS fighters in Iraq, their stories give a most chilling effect.

The experiences of the females, some of whom are minors reveal the bastardization of religion by the group. When has the sacred religion of Islam considered continuous and brutal rape to be ibadah (worship)? Why should a sane man consider taking sexual advantage of a woman, whether adult or minor, a normal and acceptable act both to man and God? What deranged person would ‘invite’ the spirit of God to share in and relish that moment of abuse through prayer?

Like most religions, there have to be guidelines enshrouded in a holy document. For ISIS, this pamphlet seems to outline the codes they have chosen to live by as well as force captured females to adjust to, whether they want to or not. The document says that slaves belong to the estate of the fighter who bought them and therefore can be willed to another man and disposed of just like any other property after his death. It also allows child rape…] “It is permissible to have intercourse with the female slave who hasn’t reached puberty, if she is fit for intercourse”.

Some females have however taken the first step towards the ideology of Salafism by identifying with ISIS on their own. The problem of Westerners being lured into Islamic radicalization groups like ISIS have become a cause for concern. The most recent case is that of Khadiza Sultana, Amira Abase and Shamima Begum. The three teenagers left families and friends behind in London and went off freely to join forces with ISIS. A recent study by the Institute for Strategic Dialogue revealed that about 4,000 Westerners have traveled to Syria and Iraq, more than 550 of them women and girls, to join the Islamic State.

In a May 5, 2015 article by Brigitte L. Nacos, titled Young Western Women, Fandom and ISIS, she says, “While Western ISIS women in Syria must know by now about the Islamic States’ views on the roles of wives and female slaves, they do not mention this in their online posts.” “Instead, they glorify ISIS’s religious cause, the courage of jihadists and martyrs, and the responsibility of women to marry holy warriors and give birth to and educate future jihadists.” “Social media posts reveal that young ISIS devotees have great admiration for the Islamic State and its jihadists, not unlike the sentiments displayed by fans of sports clubs and stars in the sports or entertainment world.”

Could there be a religious backing for all the inhuman acts committed against the female gender by ISIS? Whatever the case, the Islamic state may never be able to convince the world of the legitimacy of their violent actions.
