Durban - Two people were killed in a blaze which swept through an informal settlement near Sea Cow Lake Road in Redhill, Durban, late on Tuesday night.
KZN EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie said the burnt remains of two people were found at the scene. The cause of the fire is not known.
“In the early hours of this morning crews from a nearby EMS base responded to a report of shacks which were on fire at the informal settlement near the Natal Chemical Plant in Redhill,” he said.
McKenzie said that twelve homes were razed to the ground by the blaze before eThekwini Metro firefighters managed to douse the flames.
“Sadly two people have lost their lives in this fire and 12 shacks were burnt completely,” he said.
“The fire department managed to contain the fire and stop it from spreading to other homes nearby. Shack fires are particularly difficult to deal with because the homes are erected so closely together,” he added.
