Durban freeway barricaded by protesters

Durban - Parts of the N2’s southbound carriageway near Chesterville have been obstructed by rocks and burning barricades as a service delivery protest entered its second day on Monday.
Plumes of black smoke rose from the freeway as crowds of people littered the roadway with debris and then set it on fire.
This follows similar protest action in the same place on Sunday night.
Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said that officers from the Public Order Policing Unit were monitoring the situation.
"This has been going on since last night and we do have members on the scene that are keeping tabs on the situation. It flared up again this morning and now it is being dealt with," he said.
Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said that the southbound lanes were partially obstructed and that officers had taken measures to alleviate traffic.
"The fast lane is still closed and we have people tasked with cleaning up the debris who are going to go in shortly," she said.
