Cape Town - Four people have had to be hospitalised after guests of the African Pride Crystal Towers hotel in Century City, Cape Town, were evacuated due to a fire on the first floor.

“A fire broke out in the sauna room and has since been extinguished," City of Cape Town Fire Department spokesperson Theo Layne told Traveller24.

Layne confirmed the fire caused a huge amount of smoke, forcing an evacuation of the hotel. Six adults and three children had to be treated for smoke inhalation on the spot.

"We are currently busy with mopping up operation to remove excess water, which is now causing parts of the ceiling to collapse.

The fire has since been contained and a full investigation is under way.
