Limpopo highway closed as violent protests continue
Cape Town – A Limpopo highway remained closed to traffic on Wednesday as violent protests in the area continued.
Provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Ronel Otto, said the R40 was "blocked with burning tyres, trees and stones".
News24 was also sent photos by a user, showing a truck that had been burnt and another that had been stoned.
The protests have also seen the Phalaborwa Gate of the Kruger National Park closed for public use.
Guests to the park were advised to use alternative gates, such as those at Orpen and Punda Maria.
Otto said hundreds of community members were taking part in the protest action in the area, which she described as "volatile and tense".
The protest is said to be about the construction of a road and payouts by local mining companies.
