Nkandla tour ends, leaving some journalists disappointed

Durban - A media tour of President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla homestead ended after two-and-a-half hours on Sunday.

The tour ended at the accommodation for his security personnel around 13:30 and journalists filed back into a police bus to be served lunch at the nearby Mamba One Stop Development Centre.

News24’s Amanda Khoza, who was part of the tour, said many journalists said afterwards that it looked as though money had been wasted.

Walking to the bus, one journalist remarked, “There are cracks everywhere”.

“Why is the pool situated next to the amphitheatre?” a photographer asked rhetorically.

Khoza said other journalists expressed their disappointment once inside the bus, with one saying Nkandla had been portrayed as a palace when in fact it was nothing like that.

The media was allowed into President Jacob Zuma's Nkandla homestead in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday for an official tour.

This visit comes after the SA National Editors' Forum said it was disappointed by the limited access journalists had during a parliamentary committee oversight visit to Zuma's home on Wednesday.

Chairperson of the Nkandla ad hoc committee Cedrick Florick said last week that the committee had concluded its work in KwaZulu-Natal and would be returning to Cape Town to meet with the minister of public works and the minister of police.
