Johannesburg - About 60 people burnt tyres on roads near the Cape Town International Airport in a service delivery protest on Tuesday, police said.
"[We]... can confirm that about 60 protesters are burning tyres at the N2/Borchards Quarry [roads] due to a service delivery [protest]," Captain Frederick van Wyk said.
"SAPS members with other law enforcement agencies are on the scene monitoring the situation."
Western Cape traffic chief Kenny Africa said a section of the N2 highway had been closed as a result.
Motorists are urged to use alternative routes.
The protesters had also thrown rubbish on the freeway.
More information on the protest action was not immediately available.
