Nairobi’s Westgate Mall Reconstruction, Exclusive Pictures

The bullet holes have been filled and the shattered glass replaced, but many hearts remain wounded and a number of questions unanswered two years after al Shabab terrorists struck the Westgate Mall in Nairobi. The mall reopens today, but many worry if its reopening is premature while others wonder whether they can get past the horrors of the past and walk through its doors.

Here are some pictures of the reconstruction by Nairobi based photojournalist Will Swanson:

  • Nairobi's Westgate mall was the scene of a deadly attack by Islamist militants in 2013. 67 people were killed and over 100 were injured during the atack by Al Shabab gunmen.

  • Workmen labour to have the mall open by Saturday, before the arrival of the US president to Kenya. However, some nairobi residents fear it is opening too soon since the attack.

  • Up to a third of the mall was completely destroyed during the terror attack in 2013. Much of the building is still under construction behind closed doors.

  • Construction workers at Nairobi's Westgate mall are racing to open the shopping centre before a US presidential visit to Kenya next week.

  • Work on the Westgate mall has been ongoing and the county government is racing to have to repairs finished before the arrival of President Obama.

  • Nairobi's governor, Dr Kidero Evans (centre), invited Kenyans to visit the mall "Come and shop, because Kenya is safer than ever. If it wasn't, Obama would not be coming." he said.

  • Westgate Mall was popular with shoppers before the attack, offering a sleek appearance and expensive goods. It was a regular spot for both Kenyans and expatriates.

  • Store owners claim government soldiers took goods from the mall during the attack, and insurance claims could top up to KHS10b shillings.

  • Israeli security company IGT has installed extra security features such as cameras, explosives detectors and bollards throughout the shopping centre. There are over 100 security guards also working at the mall.

  • Cleaners work in the main entrance of the shopping centre, preparing the mall for its opening on Saturday July18th, 2015.
