National Human Settlements Brigade (NHSYB) Launched in SA

Pretoria - In an effort to address high levels of youth unemployment, the Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements has approved an empowerment programme targeting young people in the province.

The Human Settlements Empowerment Programme - in the form of a National Human Settlements Brigade (NHSYB) - is a departmental response to the call to increase government interventions for youth development.

Through the programme, youth can participate either as professionals, labourers, entrepreneurs or beneficiaries.

The youngsters who participate in the Youth Brigades will gain artisan development, employment and enterprise development, as well as professional development.

Eastern Cape MEC of Human Settlements Helen Sauls-August will roll out the programme on Thursday at Dukathole Township in Aliwal North.

The programme will then be extended throughout the province.

Over the period of 2008-2014, the youth unemployment rate in the Eastern Cape has been consistently higher than that of adults.
