South Africa : Construction Starts on Zendai City in Modderfontein
Construction has begun on the new Chinese built Zendai City, east of Johannesburg. The 84 Billion Rand development, owned by the Zendai Group, is the first Chinese mega project to be built in South Africa. The Premier of the province of Gauteng announced recently that as many as three such cities may be built east of Johannesburg in the coming years.
The Zendai City project, as yet un-named, is expected to take between ten and fifteen years to complete. The new city will have all the standard components of a modern city including a central business district, entertainment facilities, residential and commercial blocks, several shopping centres, schools, hospitals and other market related components.
Zendai developers say that the city is expected to be occupied by the African middle class and Chinese investors doing business in Africa.
The architecture is said to be inspired by African traditional art and architecture.
