Thandeka Nene Arrested on Fraud & Corruption Charges

National Prosecuting Authority spokeswoman Natasha Ramkissoon-Kara is quoted as saying that Ms Nene appeared in the Durban Commercial Crime Court before Judge Nalini Govender charged with numerous counts of fraud and corruption. She was granted bail and the case was remanded to December 12.

The 18 charges relate to the construction of a number of schools and a hospital. It is alleged that Nene lied to the CIDB ( Construction Industry Development Board) to obtain a grading for which she did not qualify and that she submitted forged tax clearance certificates for her companies. In addition it is alleged that Nene established a corrupt relationship with a public servant at the Department of Public Works.

Nene is better known as one of the "building contractors" involved in the construction of Jacob Zuma's Nkandla homestead. The current charges are not related to the Nkandla project.

Nene made the headlines last December when she was arrested on fraud charges in the Seychelles. At the time she was accused of being involved in an international R7 billion bank fraud syndicate. It is reported that she pleaded guilty to the charges and paid an admission of guilt fine.

Thandeka Nene is a former Maths teacher from KZN who runs a company called Buono Africa (Pty)Ltd.
