Jobs : Design Fellow: Football for Hope - South Africa

Program Background:

The Design Fellow will work on-site while working with the local project team and Architecture for Humanity staff to coordinate and oversee the construction of the Football for Hope Centre.

Architecture for Humanity is seeking a Design Fellow who will coordinate the construction of community and sports facilities in South Africa as part of the Football for Hope Program. The centers will be hubs for programs that tackle social issues in the community. This is a great opportunity for a mid-career designer to work with local community members, partners, and architects on projects with international exposure.

The Football for Hope program is an initiative led by FIFA and streetfootballworld to build 20 centers across Africa to tackle HIV issues while using football as a tool for social change.


Including but not limited to:

work directly with and assist program staff
work with the community, funding partners and clients to coordinate the construction of the project;

provide construction oversight in partnership with the local architect of record and consultants (including the oversight of work performed by contractors and sub-contractors);
manage change orders and expense approvals;
make timely progress reports to Architecture for Humanity, clients, partners and funders;
provide administrative support for invoicing, cost reporting, meeting coordination and other tasks;
document the project’s progress on the Worldchanging / Open Architecture Network with weekly updates;
perform scope of work in accordance with Architecture for Humanity’s obligations;

keep Architecture for Humanity informed of any issues that arise at any point during the process;
meet with potential funders, partners and members of the press;
work to secure in-kind donations as necessary;
represent the best interests of Architecture for Humanity and their funder.

Experience and skills:

Candidate Qualifications (Please only apply if you meet all requirements):

is fluent in English and at least one of South African local languages (Zulu or Tswana preferred)
5 years professional experience (post professional academic degree) with construction administration experience
is experienced in design, and the development of architectural working drawings
has strong graphics and communication skills
is creative, engaging, hardworking and fun
experience in construction of community facilities is a plus


Full-time (40hours/week)

Contract Period:

8-10 months.
Stipend: Design Fellow gets paid monthly stipend based on his/her experience and commitment level.
