South Africa : Host cities ready for Confederations Cup

Parliament - Pretoria, Mangaung, Durban and the Nelson Mandela Metro are some of the host cities that have reported to Parliament, saying they are ready to host the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup in June.

The host cities were obliged to brief Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Sport and Recreation on Wednesday regarding their state of readiness.

While the National Assembly went on recess last week, the Portfolio Committee on Sport and Recreation continued this week to deal with some of the outstanding issues. One of those issues was a briefing by the host cities of the two sporting events.

In a statement Committee Chairperson Butana Komphela said: "I am delighted to say that all the cities are ready for both the Confederations Cup and 2010."

He further wished his committee members well as they went to their constituencies.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium has also managed to meet the Confederations Cup deadline, despite it's earlier failing to satisfy the Local Organising Committee (LOC) about its state of readiness for the competition.

As a result of this failure, the LOC decided not to schedule any matches for the stadium.

The Confederations Cup will take place in June in what many see as a dress rehearsal for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Meanwhile, tickets for the World Cup went on sale last week, with hundreds of applications already received.

The tickets, which start at R140, will be officially available from the website and from FNB branches.

Members of the public will be required to fill out an application form, giving certain personal information including Identity Document numbers or passport numbers, nationality, residential addresses, as well as fax and e-mail addresses.

The applicant will know within 10 days whether their application has been approved.

The public have a choice of two types of categories - depending on whether you are interested in attending only a certain match or whether you want to watch your favourite team playing. - BuaNews
