SOCIALIGHT

archiWEB 3.0 - September 13, 2013 - 08:59

SOCIALIGHT

(Source: Alexandre Guilbeault, M.Arch. CLU Foundation Board Member)

The 2013 edition of the CLU Foundation’s competition brings the participants to reflect on the role of lighting in the urban areas of tomorrow. Whether it be a citizen, an end-user or a resident, how can lighting create a sociality between these individuals and meet their different needs.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE THEME

« To an era of strictly functional public lighting followed a period where using lighting as tools of heritage beautification developed rapidly. Wouldn’t it now be time to think of the users and to invent what we could call a social light, meaning a light and ambiance responsive to the needs, the experiences and emotions of the users and citizens? » -  Roger Narboni : Ambiances et atmosphère en lumière urbaine

The 2013 edition of the CLU Foundation’s competition invites participants to consider the role of lighting in the urban areas of tomorrow. Think of the future. Imagine urban neighborhoods where there are, for example, no cars, that the territory belongs to the people and that we put value in community, natural, recreational and social environments. Whether it be a citizen, resident or end-user, how can lighting be conceived around this individual with needs, emotions and desires. Professionals in landscape architecture, architecture or urban planning recognize that neighborhoods need to reinvent themselves. We must put aside our paradigms and open ourselves to new ideas.

Functional needs of urban lighting, such as security, traffic and signaling, have been met with rational responses by designers. But if we look at lighting solutions from a completely different angle, bringing light to a person could generate a feeling of well-being, a sense of belonging to a place or be a way to create a strong identity. In this context, should we review the traditional luminous object that can be found everywhere? How will this physically change the light source?

Without falling into the clichés of Utopia,

  • How will the many technological innovations in light help us improve the urban experience?
  • How will they shape the life of the city in various public spaces, parks, and other areas that make up a neighborhood?
  • How will the different modes of transport influence the way we illuminate the city?
  • Will we use street lighting as tools that will improve and favor the well-being of the user, as tools of communication or as tools to create different moods?

It is clear that with the transformation of urban centers, we will need to propose new solutions to adjust to the new urban realities. These are questions that challenge the members of the CLU Foundation. Now it is up to you, lighting entusiasts, to reflect and propose your vision of the role of urban lighting for tomorrow.

The future of architecture

archiWEB 3.0 - September 2, 2013 - 01:17

After a very successful first edition of the participatory book ‘What is the future of architecture?’ we are very happy to announce our decision to do it again and present - ‘The future of architecture II’!

The future of architecture is a participatory book project, self-initiated by Crap is Good. The book consists of and depends on participation and collaboration. It is entirely independent from funds, sponsoring or organisational support and therefore relies completely on its concept and your support.

With the same motivation as last year, we are in search of all possible takes on the question ‘What is the future of architecture?’

Going through the answers we’ve gotten last year, we can say there are some recurring assumptions, a red line weaving its way through the book. The book, consisting of 52 very different takes on the same question - ‘What is the future of architecture?’ - takes us from fiction stories to a philosophical email discussion, through series of images and photography, to science-fiction and poetry. While leafing through, often a blurry image would come to mind, an imaginative glimpse of the future.

In this years edition we are very happy to include the answers of Ethel Baraona, Santiago Cirugeda, ETC, and many more to be announced.

Have a look on our website for more information and send in your answer before the 1st of september, 2013.

SAN FRANCISCO FIRE DEP. HEADQUARTERS

archiWEB 3.0 - July 16, 2013 - 08:50

The sun had yet not risen when the sirens began to sound. It was the morning of Wednesday, April 18, 1906 and the city of San Francisco was shaken awake by an earthquake measuring 8.25 on the Richter scale. More than 30 fires were reported throughout the city as a result of gas leaks caused by the earthquake. San Francisco began to burn, and would continue to do so for four days and four nights.
The water network had also been seriously damaged by the quake, preventing firefighters from controlling the fire by the usual means. Yet this did not prevent them in their attempt to save the city, and they resorted to using all the tools at their disposal. They dynamited entire blocks in hopes of
creating a firewall, fought the flames with hoses where the supply hadn’t been cut and installed water pumps to use water from the bay to control fires closer to the coast.
The American people will not forget the courage of all those men who faced what even today, after 100 years is remembered as the worst natural disaster in U.S. history.

ARCHmedium proposes the creation of this fire station for the city of San Francisco that serves not only to centralize and improve the service but also as a gift and token of appreciation from the city to this department.
The new center should not only be a practical space designed to respond to the needs of firefighters, but must become an icon of the city which rose from the ashes and a reminder of the tragedy, a building that not only the people of San Francisco but the entire world associates with the image of the fire department.

d3 Natural Systems international architectural design competition

archiWEB 3.0 - July 2, 2013 - 08:59

Natural systems offer architects and designers signficant potential as alternative, ecologically performative architectonic strategies.  The d3 Natural Systems competition invites architects, designers, engineers, and students to collectively explore the potential of analyzing, documenting, and deploying nature-based influences in architecture, urbanism, interiors, and designed objects.  Established in 2009, the annual d3 Natural Systems competition is an emerging voice in alternative architecture and one of the most notable awards in speculative, performance-based design. It recognizes exemplary ideas that redefine architecture as an ecological project through the implementation of advanced programs, technologies, materials, and social interventions that engage adaptability, globalization, and emergence.

The 2013 competition calls for innovative proposals that advance sustainable thought and performance through the study of intrinsic environmental geometries, behaviors, and flows.  By identifying, examining, and applying their structural order on form and function- -bottom-up, performance-based solutions for limitless building typologies, functional programs, and material conditions may be realized.

An architecture of emergence suggests that design expression requires purpose beyond formal assumption and aesthetic experimentation itself.  Concurrent with sustainable thought, the d3 Natural Systems competition assumes that architecture does not simply form, but rather perform various functions beyond those conventionally associated with buildings.  Design submissions must be environmentally responsible while advancing inventive conceptual solutions.  Although proposals should be technologically feasible, they may suggest fantastical architectural visions of a sustainable global future.

The d3 Natural Systems competition allows designers freedom to approach their creative process in a scale-appropriate manner--from large-scale master planning endeavors, to individual building concepts, to notions of interior detail.  Accordingly, there are no restrictions on site, scale, program, or building typology, proposals should carefully address their selected context.

HYP Cup 2013 International Student Competition in Architectural Design

archiWEB 3.0 - July 1, 2013 - 08:59

http://hypcup2013.uedmagazine.net/Eg_index.php

Topic:Architecture in Transformation
Sub -Topic: The Disappearance of Architectures

Purpose of the Competition:

Architecture must disappear.
Behind the radicalism of this statement lies something crucial for the future of architecture. Architecture as a discipline should no longer think in terms of objects. Walls, facades, structures, are only modalities of architecture, but never its finality. Design comes after. After what? After situations. Architects deal with situations.

Architecture should be conceived as an integral part of the landscape. Glass, concrete or metal would in this case no longer be the elements that build architecture, but the territory, as it exists, as we relate to it.

One of the commitments of an architect is to overwhelm the observable escalation in the production of contemporary architecture by introducing new situations, dialectic situations and experiences, between inside and outside, free and available spaces in-between what is public and what is private.

Sometimes, we make architecture disappear. We make it melt within the territory, blurring the lines between architecture and landscape, between physicality and immateriality, between presence and absence.

Requirements of the Competition:
Participants can draw up the project proposal themselves and there is no limitation on architectural types. Designers of the project should take into account the features of contemporary urban architecture and pay attention to specific space needs of different user groups.
Participants can choose sites themselves. The site should be challenging and with distinct urban characteristics.
Total floor area is around 4,000㎡. It may be increased or decreased up to around 10% according to the designer.
Language and Measurement Unit: English is the official language of the competition. (Note: The title, school name, name of participants, and introduction of major design must be described in English at least); the unit of measurement is metric scale.

This year’s competition is set in the context of severe climate dynamism.  How can cities adapt to the future challenges of extreme weather? The ONE Prize is a call to deploy sophisticated design to alleviate storm impact through various urban interventions such as: protective green spaces, barrier shorelines, alternative housing, waterproofing technology, and public space solutions. We wish to reinvigorate infrastructure and repurpose spaces towards environmental adaptation in order to put design in the service of the community.

The ONE Prize seeks architects, landscape architects, urban designers, planners, engineers, scientists, artists, students and individuals of all backgrounds.

  • How can urban ecosystems be enhanced to prevent flooding?
  • What can restore Rockaway Beach social infrastructure and public space?
  • When can the New Orleans community change to accept storms without losing character?
  • What can protect Asian Coastal Cities against the unforeseen?
  • Where can shorelines be storm surge barriers as well as interactive zones?
  • How can storm proofing be seen as an opportunity to rethink the future of our cities?

The ONE Prize Award is an international competition and it is open to everyone from professional to students. The teams can have one or more members. The proposals can be for real or speculative projects, at one or more actual sites. Projects can be located either in the U.S. or abroad, but should be applicable to the U.S. Proposals need not be generated exclusively for this competition, provided that they address the intent of the competition.

Independents’ Group Fellowships

Academia - June 29, 2013 - 07:58

Proposals are sought for the inaugural round of Independents’ Group Fellowships, to commence in September 2013. IG Fellows will develop and prototype novel architectural ideas in collaboration with industry partners, to lead a future generation of design-led technologies for the built environment.

The Independents’ Group (IG) is an international research platform for interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration that brings together leading academic and industry partners to develop prototypes for the future of the built environment. It aims to enable new models of collaborative practice and address current divisions between academia and practice; between design culture and industry; and among sectors of the building industry.

Led by two of the world’s leading independent architecture schools, the IG will connect advanced manufacturing partners; technical consultants, cultural and media organisations who share a commitment to addressing future challenges in our built environment through project based research.

In 2013, four Fellowships are being offered by The Architectural Association School of Architecture, London, and the Spatial Information Architecture Laboratory at RMIT University, Melbourne. The Fellowships will provide applicants with academic research guidance, connect them to a network of industry expertise, and provide financial support for project-related costs over a six-month period. Outcomes will be disseminated to the widest possible audience through a range of research prototypes, exhibitions, publications and events.

The Fellowships are open to emerging architects with a maximum of eight years post-graduate professional experience. The IG is seeking candidates who have the potential to define future directions for design practice and have a demonstrated record of independent design research.

Applications are invited on research areas including Mass Customisation, Future Materials, Integrating Design Information, and Digital Fabrication, with a focus on applications in rapid construction in Australia, and transformation of existing buildings in Europe.
