Mozambique : Matola to Host Country's Largest Shopping Centre

MDS Architecture has designed the master plan of a new mixed use development on a 52 ha site in Matola, just south of Maputo's CBD. The first phase of the development includes a 42,000 m2 shopping centre - the first of its size in the country - and an office development.

John Williamson, a partner at MDS Architecture, says that the design of Matola Shopping Centre takes its cue from the strong art deco influence in the city of Maputo. "The shopping centre design evokes the distinct geometric shapes, and intense, bright colors that characterize the art deco style," he says.

The design incorporates an open-air walkway and an abundance of natural light. Finishes will be contemporary and contextual.
Although infrastructure is still being supplied to site and therefore construction has not yet begun, interest from South African retailers is strong. The shopping centre is expected to be completed in late 2011.

Developer McCormick Property Development 's brief for the master plan includes a hotel, a hospital, sports centre and a residential component as well as an office component. An interesting aspect is the conversion of the existing Radio Maputo building into a museum.
