South Africa : Mamelodi Shopping Centre Under Construction
Mamelodi Shopping Centre, in the residential township east of Pretoria, is expected to continue the trend of enclosed, upmarket shopping experiences in previously disadvantaged townships.
MDS Architecture has a contemporary, light filled shopping centre that will offer 38,000 m2 GLA, as well as a 2,000 m2 motor hub and 4,000 m2 office development.
Louis Pretorius of MDS Architecture says that there will also be a drivers licence training centre on the site and that the shopping centre will be linked to the hospital on an adjacent site.
The design incorporates an open-air food court and striking entrances, including a glass wall to let in the sunshine. Steel and glass have been used in the design to dramatic effect for a contemporary and upscale experience.
Developer McCormick Property Development has already secured national anchor tenants for the shopping centre, which is due for completion in late 2011.
