Corruption in the Department of Public Works totals R1.2 billion

Rampant corruption within the Department of Public Works has led misters to call for help from an independent anti-corruption unit. The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is aiming to recover R1.2 billion.

In the fight against corruption within the department, 255 investigations into fraud, bribery and nepotism have been launched. These investigations have led to 190 disciplinary hearings where department officials have been suspended or fired and still remain liable for civil suit action.

In an interview with 702 Radio, Imtiaz Fazel, the Public Works Director-General, said that while the process is slow, the department is progressing and intensifying its campaign to root out corruption.
