Call for Registered Architectural Professionals to serve on the Bursary Committee

 

The South African Council for the Architectural Profession (?SACAP?) is committed to the Transformation of the Architectural Profession and therefore it has taken steps to contribute a portion of fees towards the funding of historically disadvantaged students who have enrolled for architectural studies at all accredited Architectural Learning Sites (?ALS?s) and who have demonstrated a financial need and academic achievement.

 

SACAP invites Registered Architectural Professionals to submit applications for consideration to serve on the Bursary Committee which will manage and distribute the Education Fund to ALS?s.

 

 

Requirements to serve on the Bursary Committee:

 

1.      Registered Architectural Professionals and in good standing with SACAP.

2.      Knowledge of the Architectural Profession

3.      Educational background will be an added advantage.

 

Applications should consist of the following (in the order indicated):

1.      A letter of application (maximum two pages) explaining the applicant?s reason for applying for the appointment to serve in the Bursary Committee and the value he/she could add.

2.      An abridged CV (a maximum of three pages) highlighting his/her academic qualifications, professional registrations, expertise and experience;

3.      Three contactable referees with full names, designation, organisation, e-mail address and office and cell phone numbers.

 

As part of the appointment process SACAP reserves the right to request applicants to provide certified copies of qualifications and any other additional information or documentation considered necessary.

Position: IT Technician

Role description

The main responsibilities will be the following:

SYSTEMS AND NETWORK ADMINISTRATION

?         Install and configure operating systems

?         Setup and manage local computer, user and group accounts

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE EXAMINATION

 

INVITATION TO REGISTERED PROFESSIONALS TO BE A MEMBER OF THE TASK

TEAM FOR SACAP?s PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE EXAMINATION (PPE)

 

WHEREAS the Architectural Profession Act, Act 44 of 2000 (the Act) prescribes in Section 19(2) that the Council must be satisfied that an applicant who applies for registration as a professional

(i)             Has demonstrated his or her competence as measured against standards

determined by the council for the relevant category of registration; and

(ii)            Has passed any additional examinations that may be determined by the council.

 

SACAP adopted a policy in respect of the writing of the Professional Practice Examination (PPE).

 

The Council therefore invites registered Professionals to submit their application to be considered as a possible Task Team member to review the PPE.

 

The examination consists of two three-hour papers:

1.            The first paper is a closed book paper and will deals with ? o The Architectural Professional as Practitioner, and o Architectural Service to the Client.

 

2.            The second paper, an open book examination, deals with ? o Construction Law and Building Contracts, o The Resolution of Building Disputes

 

The task team will be required to review the syllabus for the writing of both Paper 1 & Paper 2, of the PPE.

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR MEMBERS OF THE TASK TEAM:

 

1.    Must be registered as a Professional Architect, or retired/non-practicing Architects, who had been registered with SACAP and has at least 10 years of experience in Architecture;

2.    Experience as Lecturer or Associate lecturer for 3 years or more will be an advantage;

3.    Applicants must be in good standing with SACAP and must have a full understanding of the regulatory environment.

 

Applicants are requested to submit their applications to SACAP NO LATER THAN 16:00 ON FRIDAY 21 SEPTEMBER 2018.

PPE OCTOBER 2018

The next Professional Practice Examination (PPE) will take place on 31 October 2018.  Please note the following important dates:

31 October 2018               -         Examination date.

14 September 2018 -           Applications open;

3 October 2018                 -         Closing date for applications to write the PPE;

12 October 2018               -         Confirmation eligibility to write the PPE.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING ELIGIBILITY TO WRITE THE PPE

As the online MTR system was out of order in July and August 2018, and Candidates were unable to access the MTR system in order to download the summary of their MTRs, the PPE scheduled for October 2018, will be written based on the following:

1.             The stipulation of the existing PPE policy, which states that a candidate is eligible to write the PPE if he/she has completed 50% of the period of internship, remains;

2.             The following will be applicable for this examination only:  

2.1    The eligibility of the candidate to write the PPE will be dependent on whether the candidate has been registered for at least half of the total period of internship.  This will indicate that Candidates must have been registered for the following minimum period of time:

Candidate Senior Architectural Technologists

                   *This does not include any period of time that the Candidate?s registration was cancelled for whatever reason.

2.2        The number of MTRs submitted, and the total of the value units claimed will not be taken into consideration when determining the eligibility of the Candidate to write the PPE in October 2018.

2.3        This is a once-off arrangement, made purely as a result of the fact that Candidates have not been able to submit their MTRs.

2.4        Despite the conditions for eligibility to write the examination set out above, Candidates will not be able to apply for an upgrade, after passing the PPE, before they have met all the conditions with regards to the submission of the MTRs, as set out in the MTR policy.

Monthly Training Records (MTR) online portal FUNCTIONAL

 

SACAP would like to confirm that our MTR online system is now fully functional.  Candidates can once again log into their profiles on the MTR system to submit their records.  Mentors can also sign off the submissions online.

Extension will be given for the submission of the MTRs for the following months:

Training records for these months must be submitted and signed off by the Mentor on or before 14 October 2018.

SACAP regretfully advises that the MTR online system is still not functioning.  Solving this problem is taking longer than anticipated, and we would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Extension will be given for the submission of the MTRs for the months that the system has not been operational.  This extension period will be determined once the problems have been solved.

The question of applications for the PPE, to be written in October 2018 will also be addressed soon.

The Graduate School of Architecture (GSA) at the University of Johannesburg is Africa?s youngest and most dynamic school or architecture. Following the successful implementation of the world-renowned Unit System method of teaching in the professional programme in 2015, we are now seeking to make a new appointment at the Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor* level, to commence in February 2019.

We are seeking an exceptionally motivated, qualified and energetic applicant to fulfil the role of Programme Leader in History & Theory, responsible for shaping, managing and delivering a world-class History & Theory course. In the first year of your appointment, the emphasis will be on the design and implementation of the History & Theory Dissertation (HTD) course within the School?s main programme, the professional M Arch. Thereafter, the emphasis will shift from the day-to-day management and oversight of the M Arch (Prof) programme to developing a unique post-professional

MA in Critical Theory and/or Contemporary History & Theory, tailored specifically to the African and global South contexts.

You will have demonstrable expertise in the area of nineteenth and twentieth century architectural history, with knowledge of urbanism and urban history. Proficiency in the history of architectural theory and historiography, including familiarity with major research paradigms in the field is essential. You will also have a proven track record in teaching and research, as well as excellent managerial and leadership skills. You will be able to share your vision for contributing to a programme that brings together the different strengths already present in the school, whilst developing new areas of research that are both locally and globally relevant. In addition, you will be able to meaningfully contribute to the GSA?s new cross-disciplinary think-tank, Transformative Pedagogies, an on-going design and research initiative tasked with finding innovative and intellectually rigorous approaches to the transformation of architectural canon and pedagogy in a developing world context.

You will share the responsibility of developing a robust and challenging programme with two assistants reporting to you for mentorship and guidance as we seek to build a new generation of African architectural scholars. Publication, travel and exhibition opportunities are highly encouraged and supported through discussion and negotiation with the Head of School.

You will be expected to:

?                Teach and assess architectural history and theory at the Master?s level;

?                Contribute actively to research in your specialist field related to architectural history & theory and/or urbanism and urban theory

Following the successful implementation of the world-renowned Unit System method of teaching in the professional programme in 2015, we are now seeking to make a new appointment at the Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor* level, to commence in February 2019.

We are seeking an exceptionally motivated, qualified and energetic applicant to fulfil the role of Deputy Head of School and Academic Leader, responsible for assisting the Head of School in shaping, managing and delivering a worldclass, transformative pedagogical model, uniquely rooted in the African context. In the first year of the appointment, the emphasis will be on working closely with the GSA?s current cohort of part-time adjunct lecturers (Unit Leaders) to fulfil the mandate of excellence in the School?s main programme, the professional M Arch. Thereafter, the emphasis will shift from stabilisation of the current offerings to develop new and bold fields of knowledge and research across the School?s three programmes: M Arch, our new post-professional Master?s programme, the M Arch Design, Theory & Practice and in our creative practice-led PhD.

The GSA is rapidly developing research and teaching strengths in the following six specialist areas: design research; socially-responsible design; building technology; landscape; urbanism and critical theory. The successful applicant will not only have demonstrable expertise in at least two of these areas with the breadth and vision to encompass other specialisations, including new ones not listed above.

A proven track record in teaching and research is essential, as are excellent managerial and leadership skills. You will be able to share your vision for contributing to a programme that brings together the different strengths already present in the school, whilst developing new areas of research that are both locally and globally relevant. In addition, you will be able to meaningfully contribute to the GSA?s new cross-disciplinary think-tank, Transformative Pedagogies, an on-going design and research initiative tasked with finding innovative and intellectually rigorous approaches to the transformation of architectural canon and pedagogy in a developing world context.

* Appointment at Associate Professor level requires a PhD or extensive practice experience.

You will be expected to:

?                Teach and assess architectural design at the Master?s level;

?                Contribute actively to research in your specialist field;

?                Publish research, including the work of yourstudents, using appropriate channels (peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations) as well as exhibitions, new forms of media and speaking engagements;

?                Share in the administration and management of the GSA and the wider Faculty;

?                Participate in official meetings of the GSA and Faculty;

?                Cultivate an active presence as a public intellectual;

?                Supervise postgraduate students within the appropriate programme offerings;

?                Develop key national and international links and collaborative opportunities;

?                Actively contribute to the development and growth of the GSA

Minimum Requirements:

?                A Master?s degree in Architecture or related disciplines;

?                An in-depth and current knowledge of architectural design and/or urban design;

?                A demonstrable research interest and proven research ability (articles, exhibitions, books);

?                A record of collegiality, collaboration and initiative;

?                Experience of teaching/reviewing at tertiary level;

?                An international profile with a demonstrable network and collaboration potential.

Requirements: Minimum educational qualification: Masters in Architecture (or equivalent) as recognised by the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP). Registration with a professional council:   Registration as a Professional Architect with SACAP.  Appointment experience:  3 years? post-experience registered with SACAP as a Professional Architect. Recognition of prior experience:  Grade A: At least 0-2 years? appropriate/recognisable experience in this profession after registration with the SACAP as a Professional Architect. Grade B: At least 14 years? appropriate/recognisable experience in this profession after registration with the SACAP as a Professional Architect. Sufficiently physically fit and healthy to walk long distances in the confines of the building and on site and carry out inspections.  Competencies (knowledge/skills): Knowledge of the Standard for Infrastructure Procurement and Delivery Management and the IDMS Toolkit ? Understand the roles and legal obligations of role-players at all three spheres of government and public entities ? Sound interpersonal and good verbal and written communication skills in at least two of the three official languages of the Western Cape ? Computer literacy (MS Office).

 

Duties (key result areas/outputs): Programme and project planning ? Conduct programme and project implementation and monitoring ? Provide assistance in the commissioning of projects ? Conduct programme and project evaluation ? Manage built environment programmes and interaction with a wide range of role-players and stakeholders across all spheres of government/private sector and communities ? Monitor and control the delivery of health infrastructure programmes on time, within budget and within defined quality standards.

The South African Council for the Architecture Profession (SACAP) is the regulatory authority for the Architectural Profession established from the Architectural Profession Act, 2000 (Act No. 44 of 2000) (referred to as ?the Act?). SACAP is one of the six built environment professional councils resorting under the Council for the Built Environment (CBE) which reports to the Minister of the Department of Public Works (DPW).

SACAP regulates the profession as follows:

?            Registration of suitably qualified architectural professionals and candidates.
?            Administers a code of professional conduct.
?            Guides the architectural profession by issuing guideline professional fees
?            Protects the public? interest by identifying the type of architectural work each   category of professionally registered person.
?            Regulates the standards of architectural education offered at Tertiary institutions, (referred to as Architectural Learning Sites).
?            Recognises architectural voluntary associations which provide the profession with Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses.


Position: Administrator - Registrations

SACAP is looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic and energetic person to join SACAP as an Administrator - Registrations. To provide administration support to the registration of architectural professionals and maintain registration records.

Role description
The candidate will be responsible for the following:

?            To report on own performance and work activities.
?            Retrieve online applications for Registration and finalise on the electronic system.
?            Compile reports on work done.
?            Maintain records.
?            Engage other stakeholders where necessary.
?            Handle queries by architectural professionals and general public.
?            Act on queries received from Contact Centre when required.
?            Act as relief to Contact Centre when required.
?            Understanding of relevant legislative and statutory mandate of professional bodies/ Councils.
?            Knowledge of record keeping/ documentation management systems.

Requirements
?            Matric.
?            Post-matric Certificate or Diploma or Certificate in Administration or similar.
?            Minimum of 2 years relevant work experience.
?            Administration background is essential.
?            PC Literacy.
?            Record keeping and archiving systems (manual and electronic).
?            Business Etiquette
