Maxi's Al Fresco Fiasco : Restaurant Facade Collapses Over M1 Freeway
A section of the glass facade of Maxi's Restaurant, which spans the busy M1 freeway between Johannesburg and Pretoria, collapsed this week during a storm. The remaining damaged sections have been removed for safety. It appears that nobody was killed or injured as the failure occurred in the early hours of the morning when traffic was light. Hundreds of thousands of vehicles pass under the building every day. Repairs are under way and the usually busy restaurant has relocated numerous tables to the ground floor areas, where business continues as usual.
The building, adapted from a post-stressed concrete pedestrian bridge, was erected in the late nineties. The building was designed by the Johannesburg firm of architects Winterbach Pretorius and White and constructed by Bird Construction of Pretoria.
