SOUTH
AFRICA BIDS FOR UIA 2011 CONGRESS
|
| UIA
XXIV 2011 |
"On behalf of the South African Institute of
Architects, I have great pleasure in inviting the International Union of Architects
to hold the 2011 World Congress in Durban, South Africa. The
bid has the support of the
South African Government
and the
eThekwini
Municipality, the greater region incorporating Durban.
It has also been unanimously endorsed by the
Africa Union of
Architects.
The Congress has only been
held once before in the southern hemisphere, in 1969 in
Buenos Aires. It has been held in Africa previously, in 1951
in Rabat and in 1985 in Cairo. Durban presents an
opportunity to hold the first UIA Congress in Sub-Saharan
Africa and deal with topics relevant to the majority of the
world’s population. The Congress will be an opportunity to
promote architecture on the continent and also expose the
world architectural community to a dynamic and diverse
architecture environment."
