National Heritage Council - Protect Historic Sites

Plea for protection of historic sites

Pretoria - National Heritage Council CEO Sonwabile Mancotywa has called on community members to desist from vandalising sites of historic significance.

Speaking at a memorial of six South Africans who were killed in Lesotho between 1982 and 1986, Mancotywa noted that many sites with historical significance have been vandalised.

"Fifty years from now, these sites of significance must remain intact through active protection by government and communities," Mancotywa said.

The lives of six fallen heroes Mzwanele Fazzie, Lepota Marai, Sipho Notana, Mzukisi Skweyiya, Cassius Barnabas and Boniswa Ncukana were remembered during a public mass memorial service held on Monday at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in the Eastern Cape during the commemoration of Human Rights Day.

Their remains were repatriated from Lesotho earlier this month and will be reburied in their respective hometowns.

Mancotywa said the event was to commemorate the lives that were lost in search of human rights in South Africa and celebrate the rights of democracy that the country is now enjoying.

SA Prisons To Be Renamed - Hearings Under Way

Pretoria - The Correctional Services Department will begin the Mpumalanga leg of its public hearings on the renaming of correctional centres this morning at the Barberton rugby field.

This is part of Correctional Services Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula's plan to rename 11 correctional centres in all six regions of the department. The first phase, which comprised of written submissions, ended last month.

The theme for the renaming campaign is: "Contributing to social cohesion through renaming of Correctional Centres,” further public hearings are scheduled to take place in Modimolle, Kroonstad and Mitchells Plain.

A call to rename the country’s correctional facilities has come under fire from academics and organisations, which said the renaming was unnecessary as more pressing matters in Correctional Services had to be addressed. But the department has maintained that the renaming is as important as other Correctional Services matters.

Dolomite Squatters Relocated To Benoni

New, safer home for Bapsfontein residents

Pretoria - Three thousand Bapsfontein residents, who had been living on unstable and dangerous dolomitic land, have all been moved to a safer location.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality wrapped the process of relocating the residents last week, moving the families and their belongings to Mayfield and Putfontein in Benoni.

The move became necessary when in November last year, the Bapsfontein informal settlement was declared a local disaster area in terms of section 55 of the Disaster Management Act due to dolomite instability. It was found that the residents were living in an area that was not safe for human settlement.

The relocation of families began in December 2010, and should have been concluded in the middle of February but was delayed by a number of factors, including unfavorable weather conditions and resistance from certain quarters of the community, the municipality said.

Correctional Services Sets New Targets

Pretoria - Correctional Services National Commissioner Tom Moyane presented the department's five-year strategic plan, which provides bold and clear performance targets, to the Portfolio Committee.

Presenting the plan in Cape Town on Tuesday, Moyane said his department remained focused on turning around a number of problematic areas, including jacking up the department's information technology systems and improving integration with the broader criminal justice system.

In his presentation, the commissioner promised to make significant improvements in strengthening internal controls and improve rates of conviction of officials charged with fraud, corruption and serious maladministration, from the already high level of 84 percent to 92 percent by 2015/16.

Moyane said to strengthen internal controls, no major expenditure will be undertaken on any project without a proper business case to avoid historical pitfalls of hasty decisions to expend significant funds on poorly thought through projects.
