Eskom joins African Utility Week as COP17 agreement is set to impact generation sector

African Utility Week director Claire Volkwyn says the recent launch of the Green Climate Fund at COP17 in Durban will impact quite significantly on the generation sector in particular. "The South African government is very committed to the reduction of greenhouse gases," Claire explains, "and with the introduction of the Carbon Tax, companies that produce high emissions will be penalised for these. At the present time, it is only Eskom that is subject to an emissions tax, but this will start impacting other industries too.

Sad day at Shamwari as Rhino dies

The orphaned rhino calf, named Tanner 2, that survived the horrific poaching incident last month at Shamwari Game Reserve unfortunately died yesterday.
The Shamwari Veterinary team really did their utmost to recuperate Tanner 2 with the finest veterinarian care and24 hour love and attention and he was responding well once he was relocated to the boma at the Wildlife Centre.

Carbon neutral flying to King Shaka Airport for COP17

As the world engages in one of the most important Conferences of the Parties, we can only hope that a much needed deal comes out of this, the 17thmeeting on climate change. In the face of climate change, and specifically anthropogenic warming due to carbon emissions, the reality of the cost to the environment of delegates, rock stars and world leaders flying in from around the world, cannot be ignored.
However, the legacy of COP17 need not be an enormous carbon footprint.
