The once sleepy town of Kakamega has in the last few years woken up to rapid development following the upgrade of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology in 2007, which created immediate demand for hostel accommodation. The fastest growing sector in the town, established by colonialists as an administrative centre in the 1930s, is real estate that has pushed the prices of land in recent times.
