Hawkers Union Demands End to Arrests

[Nairobi Star] THE Kenya National Alliance of Street Vendors and Informal Traders has written to the police demanding communication to local authorities across the country banning the arrest of their members by council askaris. This follows a statement by Internal Security assistant minister Orwa Ojode in Parliament last week that council askaris have no powers to arrest or prosecute people.

And it appears that confusion has marred their graduation, with the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) shifting blame to the Kenya National Examinations Council for not releasing the results. But a KNEC official insists that the results were released.

Kathangu said the county needs a politician who is committed to selflessly fighting for the welfare of the people of Embu. The former legislator said the other aspirants for the senate seat are after amassing wealth and not service to the people.

Tuskys MD Denies Assaulting Brother

[Nairobi Star] THE Managing Director of Tuskys Supermarkets was yesterday charged in court over allegations of assault. Stephen Mukuha Kamau appeared before Chief Magistrate Esther Maina and denied unlawfully assaulting his brother Yusuf Kamau, who is also one of the company's director. It is alleged that on February 20 at Tuskys Headquarters in Embakasi, the accused assaulted his brother in full view of the other staff members thereby occasioning him bodily harm.

Karume 'Son' DNA Test May Stop Burial

[Nairobi Star] A 45-year-old secondary school teacher from Kiambu has filed a court case to block the burial of former Defence minister Njenga Karume. His suit will be heard this morning by Justice GBM Kariuki at the Family division of the High Court. Edwin Thuo wants Karume's family, his servants and any other persons stopped from burying the politician until DNA material has been extracted from his body.

Two Killed in Attack Against Army

[Shabelle] Mandera - At least two people have been killed in an attack by armed men at Mandera town, north east Kenya, officials and residents say on Tuesday.

Speed Up Anglo Leasing Probe

[Nairobi Star] The Nigerian government has reportedly included Sh5.2 billion (N10 billion) in its proposed 2012 budget for the purchase of a naval ship that Kenya paid Sh4.1 billion for in 2003, and which has not been delivered. However, sources at Kenya's Department of Defence strongly refuted the claims and said the ship, ordered and Sh4.1 billion paid in 2003, is scheduled to be delivered to Kenya this year.

Mayor Told to Resign

[Nairobi Star] A row has rocked Bomet Municipal Council after a section of councillors demanded the resignation of Bomet mayor Joyce Korir on Friday over corruption allegations. The councillors threatened to paralyse operations at the council if the mayor will not quit office by the end of this week saying they no longer have confidence in the way she is running council affairs.

Tribute to Njenga Karume for Peace

[Nairobi Star] In late 2008 a friend told me that I reminded her of Njenga Karume in a Giorgio Armani suit and with a laptop. This was after she heard of Kikuyus for Change, and she did not mean it as a compliment. I also did not take it as such because I viewed Karume as part of the group that had made us form Kikuyus for Change.
