Give Universities Research Funds, Urges Olweny

EDUCATION Assistant Minister Prof Ayiecho Olweny has faulted the government for elevating most technical institutions to universities without providing adequate funding. Olweny attacked the state which he said has prioritised elevating technical institutions to universities without focusing on funding research.

Jilted KCSE Candidate Commits Suicide in Gucha

A Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education candidate has committed suicide after reportedly being dumped by his lover in Gucha district. Dennis Isaboke's body was found dangling from at his home on Saturday at Oroche village. Isaboke wrote a suicide note to his lover who is a student at the same school saying he had decided to commit suicide after she jilted him.

Candidate Sits Paper in Maternity Ward

A KCSE candidate from a school in Kigumo district, Murang'a county, is sitting the exams inside a maternity ward after delivering a baby girl yesterday morning.Rose Nyambura Kamande, 18, from Githima secondary school, went into labour on Wednesday evening and was rushed to Kiria-ini Consolata Mission Hospital where she delivered the baby through a Caesarian section.

College Students Block City Road Over Colleague's Death

Multimedia University College students in Nairobi took to the streets on Saturday to protest the death of a colleague. They uprooted signboards on roadsides and billboards and destroyed sheds at various bus stops. The students also barricaded the usually busy Magadi Road for four hours before police were called in to quell the chaos.

Troops Will Not Leave Until Al Shabaab Is Defeated - Saitoti

KENYA army troops fighting the al Shabaab militia group in Somali will not move out until they wipe out the group, Internal Security minister Prof George Saitoti has declared. Saitoti lamented that the group had threatened to sabotage Kenya's economy especially the tourism sector, thus the need toelimniate it.

Leave Raila Out of Lost KKV Funds, ODM Says

ODM leaders in Western province have accused the G7 Alliance of attempting to taint the name of the Prime Minister Raila Odinga by implicating him in the Kazi Kwa Vijana scandal. Speaking in Matayos over the weekend , the leaders led by Budalangi MP Ababu Namwamba defended the PM saying he is not directly involved in the implementation of the Kazi Kwa Vijana funds loss.

National Land Commission Needed Urgently - NGO

Kituo Cha Sheria now wants the government to fast track the formation of the National Land Commission to spearhead land reforms. According to Mombasa regional officer Kigen Korir, historical injustices along the Coastal strip are supposed to be investigated urgently by the NLC which is yet to be formed. He said that the ministry is side stepping on the land issues by starting the reforms without NLC.

Poly for Every Coastal County - Balala

A Coast MP has said there is need to have at least one quality polytechnic in all of the six counties in the region. Mvita MP Najib Balala said this will make the region competitive in terms of education and also enable youth to be more productive in the job market.

I Won't Contest in 2012 Polls, Says Karume

Former Defence minister Njenga Karume says he has no interest in any political seat in next year's general election as alleged by a section of Central Kenya politicians. Karume dispelled rumours that he was eyeing a political position in 2012, saying he was only interested in uniting Kenyans, especially people from the Mt Kenya region, "who are in need of a spokesperson after president Kibaki retires next year". He also dismissed claims by a section of the Kikuyu Council of Elders and political leaders from the region that he was eyeing the presidency.
