José Carlos Guimarães seventh coach of national basketball team

Angola , Luanda – Confirmed last Friday as manager of the national senior males basketball team coach, the Angolan José Carlos Guimarães becomes the seventh coach of this squad.A former national basketball squad player himself, José Carlos Guimarães, who has also been junior national teams coach and assistant coach of the AA team, will make his debut appearance in international competitions as head-coach in the pre-Olympic tournament, set for July in Venezuela, in which he will have the challenge of qualifying the squad for the 2012 London Olympic Games. The 48-year old coach, who replaced the French Michel Gomez, is the fourth coach of Angolan nationality and has the advantage of having already worked with some of the national squad players when he was assistant coach. José Carlos Guimarães, who is also the coach of first division Interclube team, has also played for Portugal’s Benfica team.   The Angolan national basketball team has the highest number of African trophies (10), followed by Egypt (5), Senegal (5), the Central African Republic and Côte d’Ivoire come third with two trophies each, followed by Morocco and Tunisia with one African title each.
